Gifted-Talented Resource Group
MAY-JUNE 2006 NEWSLETTER
INTRODUCTION
Welcome, new parents, to the newsletter of the Gifted-Talented Resource Group. The email list for this newsletter continues to grow as you spread the word to other parents.
This newsletter is usually emailed monthly on the 30th, every other month. So please email your submissions to the editor, Leslie Mann, by the 25th of the month: LmannJCH@aol.com.
G-T was formed by the district as a steering committee to lend support to D303's gifted and talented students and their families. This newsletter keeps you up-to-date on the committee’s doings and serves as a source of information for all the parents of gifted and talented students in our district. So, if you know of an activity, program or Web site that serves G-T kids and their families, this is the place to share it with others. |

Assuming our biggest project for the 2006-2007 school year will be hosting the second annual Resource Fair in the spring, we hope to plan a fall event, too, that will benefit the G-T kids and their families.

Please call or email the steering committee members below with your thoughts. What programs or projects do you believe this group should sponsor?

If this helps trigger ideas, the following is our mission statement:

To serve the district’s gifted students by:
- Facilitating communication between the administration and the parents of the gifted
- Serving as a liaison between the parents and political advocacy groups
- Promoting awareness of the needs of the gifted to the district’s educators
- Supporting educational activities for the students and their parents
|
Meantime, here is an idea that several members of the steering committee would like to pursue: a hands-on career day for middle-schoolers. As you know, the district’s job shadowing program does not serve middle-schoolers. The gifted kids, especially, are hungry for more information about careers. At least one of our middle schools hosts a career day with structured speeches, but this event could supplement that. We could bring in professionals (many have offered their services) for, say, half-hour time slots, where a limited number of kids could meet with them to learn about their careers. Kids could choose to see several professionals during the event, for a half-hour each, on a sign-up basis. IF THIS INTERESTS YOU, PLEASE TELL ONE OF THE COMMITTEE MEMBERS. If we have enough interest, we can organize a subcommittee to get this off the ground.

The steering committee meets monthly on the third Thursday of the month at 11:30 a.m. at the Ragamuffin coffee shop in St. Charles. In June, the third Thursday falls on the 15th. You are welcome to come. We will email you if the date changes.

Please see the Gifted/Talented Resource Group's website (under Advocacy section) for updates on legislation that affects gifted kids.

This group receives no funds from the school district, so we are on our own financially. We are filing for a 501(c)(3) nonprofit status for this group, so that we can proceed with fund-raisers. IF 501 FILING IS FAMILIAR TERRITORY FOR YOU AND YOU ARE WILLING TO HELP OUT, PLEASE EMAIL TRISH AT PLBorger@earthlink.net.
In the meantime, members of the steering committee are using their OWN MONEY for start-up costs for this group, including registering for the Web site. Please, parents, if you are willing to help out by contributing a few dollars, contact one of the committee members listed below. |
